Updates in Infectious Diseases

Online course on infectious diseases

Infectious diseases (ID) affect the lives of almost every person in the world.  Even those who have healthy immune systems are susceptible to illness.  We are surrounded by pathogens and the battle to keep them at bay is intensifying as we are encountering more antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria.

This is resulting in the use of less than optimal older medications.  Not all news is bad, however, with the recent introduction of hepatitis C treatments that have a greater than 90% cure rate.  New vaccines are available and there are improvements in rapid diagnosis for infectious diseases.

The goal of this course is to provide updates on the treatment of various infectious diseases.  This eight-lecture program will cover a wide range of ID related topics.

You will begin by learning about Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT), followed by pediatric antibiotics.  You will then hear an update on Polymixin use and advances in the management of Hepatitis C Genotype-1.  With antibiotic resistance a pressing issue, you will next learn about new antibiotics in development.  The following session will discuss immunization updates.  The final two topics are “updates in rapid diagnostics for infectious diseases” and antimicrobial stewardship.

Successful completion of this course will provide you with 12 (1.2 CEUs) hours of ACPE accredited continuing education credit.  Though there is a lot of material, you are able to complete this course at your own pace and start/stop/rewind lectures at your convenience.  This program is designed for the busy pharmacist who requires flexibility in completing CE while balancing a demanding work/life balance.
